How They are Treated

How They’re Treated

For all the people who think being different is weird or wrong, that needs to stop. There
is no reason that a person should not be able to express themselves. Being apart of the LGBTQ+
community involves having issues with the outside world’s opinion about them and fear of
getting hurt or knocked down for being themselves. LGBTQ stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual,
transgender, and queer. There are always different opinions on how people should love who they
love, and what they look like. The stereotype of young girls or young boys that play with the opposite genders toys will become gay or lesbian, or maybe transgender.

Peoples opinions on the LGBTQ community affects how they walk through life. They are
bullied, they are scared to be who they are, and when they come out they risk having suicidal
thoughts when things get bad and they feel like there is no other way. Madison Irwin states “One
things they go through is bullying and death because some people of course hunt them down to
kill them. Being gay, lesbian, trans, asexual, and so much more, so that’s one thing they struggle
with. Some LGBTQ plus members kill themselves because they’re so depressed from all the
bullying and harassment they get that they just can't handle it anymore so they end their lives.”
She explains how they go through harsh moments throughout their lives due to who they are and
want to be. In some religions it makes it harder for them to be accepted by their families and
friends.

Also race is a leading cause in not being accepted for who they want to be. In the black

community it is less accepted by their friends and family since their culture is well put together
and never really changes. “Holly heck yes, of course it’s harder for a person of color to come out
as gay. As with most things in society, white or fairer skinned people dominate the
representation. A lot of people of color see being LGBTQ plus as being “white” when obviously
that’s not the case.” Jasmine Duffy explains in depth how it is harder for people of color struggle
more with being accepted by their families and thee stereotypes most, have to live up to or not be apart of.

Although mental, sexual, and verbal abuse is very present in the LGBTQ community,
there is also a lot of support within and outside of their community. For the people who support
and understand how they feel and accept them for who they will and does make their lives better.
Irwin states, “I would of course be their for them, and whatever they need, I would support
them... I wouldn’t say oh you’re gay you can’t be that and disown them. I would support them
the whole way through.” Many people in the LGBTQ community does not have the support like
some of their peers within the community, and all they do is long for it. LGBTQ plus is a way of
life, it is a safe place that helps people get through the hard times and know they are not alone.
