Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last 20 years, chances are you’ve heard of Netflix. Starting in 1997 as an underground DVD service, today Netflix is one of the biggest names in streaming services. With an array of TV shows from the past like Gossip Girl, Parks and Rec, and Twin Peaks, Netflix has long established itself as a reliable pit stop for our TV nostalgia. Now it seems, Netflix is now in the business of making their own shows, spawning off hits like 13 Reasons Why, The Crown, Marvel’s The Defenders, and Stranger Things. With all the success and revenue Netflix is generating, should cable providers be worried? Is Netflix the future?
Some Hillgrove students seem to think so.
“It’s more about what you watch and what you don’t watch,” says Ashley Beck, (10th), who’s had Netflix for 5 years.
“You can basically watch whatever you want at any given time,” says Kyndal Benn. (10th) With Netflix’s cheap prices and an assortment of shows, it’s not hard to see why popular opinion is swaying toward Netflix. However, while the youthful stance appears to be pro-Netflix, there are some adults who still prefer cable and believe that cable providers are still in it for the long run.
English teacher Mrs. Bell expressed, “ I hardly ever watch Netflix at home. I use it a lot for work, anything I can use to show students movies or documentaries”. Although when asked if she would replace her cable with Netflix, Mrs. Bell responded, “Not yet. It is between Netflix and Hulu.” Looks like cable providers are in for a long ride. Unless they step up their game, it looks like Netflix will be taken over our TV screens soon.
