The End of the F***ing World is a Netflix series about James, a seventeen year-old boy who considered himself a psychopath, and Aylssa, a rebellious classmate who takes James on journey to find her father and escape from her home life. During this journey, Aylssa and James break into a rich man’s house. James went exploring around the house and found a video recorder containing illegal, provocative videos of the owner of the house. Seeing as they found the video, James killed the owner of the house and hid the body with Alyssa. They have been running from the cops ever since. The End of the F***ing World has been trending since 2018 on Netflix. The dark comedy show is meant for seventeen year-olds and up. There are many parents who have concerns for the teens under seventeen years old. The Netflix showing uses a lot of derogatory language and gory scenes. Despite all of this, teens are still drawn to the series, whether it is because of the psychotic point of view, the relatedness towards teens, or even the gory content. Many teens at Hillgrove High School can agree with me.
Ximena is a sophomore at Hillgrove High School. She states, “ When starting the show, it seemed a little weird, but the more I watched, the more I was interested. I don’t believe psychopaths should be condemned just because they are considered a ‘psychopath.’ They should only be punished if they were to act out on it in a bad or unlawful way.” Many people were thrown off by the beginning of the series, by how weird it is to get to see through the eyes of a psychopath. It made people wonder if psychopaths are maybe born the way they are, how do they function in life, and how their lives differ from others. The more people watch it the more interesting it gets.
Eryn Young, a sophomore at Hillgrove High School, also loved the relatedness of the show. She says, “ Most teenagers can relate to this show due to the angst felt with the characters throughout and the teenage rebellion movement that scattered in the plot line. I would most definitely watch the second season of this show , I'm excited for the 2nd season (I’m not sure if they’re having one).” The End of the F***ing World brings a lot to the table. It is relatable, gory, comedic, and sometimes joyful. Many teens and young adults enjoy the show.
