Many things from Jhene’s album differ from other artists, her songs, her tones, even her cover. Kennady Bryant, a senior at Hillgrove, says, “I love it. I mean, they do- listen, they do a lot with album covers nowadays, and they're very interesting to say the least. I feel like I like it a lot.” Bryant also says, “Overall, I think the album is like, really, really good. I mean, there's no- not even that. I feel like that album, like, for albums you look at for nowadays, you want to be able to start, like start listening to it and listen to it all the way through. And I feel like you can do that with her album.” Jhene Aiko has four albums, Sail Out, Souled Out, Trip, and Chilombo. Jordan Amlett, a sophomore at Hillgrove, says, “ Of Jhene’s, [my favorite album is] probably Trip.” Some people really like the album Chilombo. “ Definitely because it shows how much she’s grown,” Kendall Gibson, a sophomore at Hillgrove, says.
On the album, Jhene talks a lot about the sun. “Oh, okay. Sorry I had to process that in my head. I feel like she's talking about [the sun] because you know Jhene [is] real spiritual. I feel like she’s talking about my good friend up there upstairs and [is] talking about how the sunrises and we don't even have to ask for it. The sun [is] always gonna rise so guess what? God's always gonna be there,” Bryant says. Gibson says, “ She kinda likes nature a lot and she posts a lot of pictures [of nature]. Plus, I think she wants to show ppl she’s the light and [is] rising over everyone.” Some people have a variety of favorite songs. “ Aside from P**** fairy, BS. It just speaks to me on a different level, it just speaks to me. I don't know why, but like, you know, when you're going through something you just want to, like, scream the song. It really, like, makes you angry because like the words are speaking to you, and I can learn the words eas[il]y,” Amlett says.
Jhene Aiko has a certain vibe when you listen to her music. Gibson says, “ It speaks [to] me on a level that makes me wanna dance and feel good.” Bryant says, “I get like... when I listened to Jhene's music, like her new album, I get like windows down, sun on your face wind through your hair music all the way, like those summer, have fun with your friends vibes.”
Overall, Jhene Aiko’s new album is showing her growth and giving off those chill summer vibes. “Well to me, other R&B artists nowadays are very much… I wouldn't say it's true R&B because [it's] very like, auto tuned and very filtered. It's not like true, true R&B. I feel like Jhene is more of on a path of how true R&B used to be back in like your early 90s,” Bryant says. Jhene really sets herself apart from the people in her genre, as well as her peers in the music industry.
