A substitute teacher of Bernard Awtrey Middle School in Cobb County Georgia was fired last week because of labeling students as angels and devils. She labeled them by the behavior they showed in class. The substitute teacher had been in the classroom since the beginning of the school year because the permanent teacher was on maternity leave, so she claimed to know the students. Parents and school officials did not tolerate the situation because she is an adult and should be professional.
Many people said they would be very mad and would definitely do something about what she did. 22 year-old, Stormi Stout, stated, “If I was an authority figure, such as a principal, I would observe that teacher and offer suggestions on how she can alter her praises and consequences.” Stout went on to explain, “If I were a parent, that would make me feel like less of one, almost as if I was being slapped in the face because I send my kids to school in hopes that they learn in a productive and safe environment, free from verbal, mental, and emotional turmoil.”
Many people feel the teacher was judgmental and deserves punishment. Lydia Ohare, a junior of Hillgrove High School explained, “It really makes me feel like the teacher is being judgemental because she doesn't really know what the students are going through if she calls some of them devils. Like they could be going through tough times at home.” Ohare continued to say, “ In my opinion yes she should've been fired because that was no right to divide her students by two names, angels and devils. That's just being extremely rude.”
Many say it is disrespectful to the children, parents, and even Christians for her to label the students. Savannah Hurst, of Villa Rica, GA, stated, “I feel like that’s disrespectful not only towards the students, but towards people of a Chrisian standpoint.” Hurst explained, “ I would make it known to any school officials in charge that that is unacceptable behavior, not only highly disrespectful but very unprofessional and dehumanizing to kids who may not be as nice or expressive of their feelings like most kids.”
The teacher's actions by writing a whole list labeling students as devils and angels caused an up-rage between teachers, students and parents. Many parents became angry because they do not want their children being called devils, and plus they do not want their children's self worth to struggle. In result to the teacher’s actions, she was fired.
