Does Music Split Friendships?

We all have our different taste and opinions on music. Has it ever occured to you that maybe your friends influence your music taste more than you do? Most music we listen to are indeed influenced by our friends. We all have that one song our friends hates but only loves it when you’re around. Come on do you really enjoy listening to "Bodak Yellow" by Cardi B by yourself? Do you even listen to "Havana" by Camila Cabello without your friend?
I met up with student Khynna Mason, class of 2021, and asked her “what type of music do you listen to that your friend hates?” She answered with “Pop and different types of genres...I listen to pretty much anything.”
Most people friends listen to one type of music when they are together, but when they are apart they listen to pretty much whatever is on their playlist. We all know we wouldn’t listen to “New Rules” [by Dua Lipa] with our friends, because everyone else thinks it is lame but you think it is the most fire song you have ever heard! She states “75.5% they influence it (trails off) I kind of find my own music, so that’s why I say like 75.5 percent.” other students like Jeff class of 2019 answered with “100% they do.” Come on would you really want to listen to a screaming Skittle( Tekashi 6ix9ine) by yourself? She explained that their music choice, “Yeah, it doesn’t change who they are.”When I asked Naya class of 2021, she answered with “We just won’t be able to share the aux because of our music difference” Others simply just flat out don’t share music with each other because of the difference. Think about it, was the last song you discovered from a friend or did you find it on your own?
“She loves country music but I can’t stand it”, says Sarah Needham class of 21. She continues with, "I like listening to pop [both friends kind of look at each other for reassurance]." Tyler, class of 2019, states, “Bro I love Kehlani [other Tyler looks at him funny]” Other Tyler, also class of 2019, says “Who is Kehlani?” They both started to humorously argue about the matter.
The next time you are with your friends ask about the other genres they listen to and see what they say. Whether they like Invasion of Privacy album by Cardi B or Cosmic album by Bazzi, even if you do not like what they listen to, it should not define your friendship with them.
