Music is so versatile because music can get you in your feelings, make you get hyped, even make you do things to yourself but it’s mostly being used to get away and escape and get in their zone. Music helps you stay focused and block all distraction especially when you're doing schoolwork, going to work out, or play it before a sporting event.
Kennedi Cox a middle school student states “music helps me when I’m stressed and i need to calm down”. “I listen to music before, during and after school”. “the first music genre i listen to is calm music like Brent Faiyaz, Jhene Aiko, Bryson Tiller, Giveon, etc.” “The best time for me to listen to music is either in the morning or in my 3rd block because on the bus it’s nice and quiet and in my 3rd block it’s a lot of loud people and I can't really focus so i put my air pods in and get to work”. “But I don’t listen to it 24/7 because it sometimes makes my head hurt”. “I don’t like rap music because most of them are screaming in their songs and i don’t like that”. “My second type of music is r&b with artists like R Kelly, Usher, Chris Brown, Anita Baker, etc.” “The only music i listen to when I clean up is Rihanna or queen naija”.
Shania Lee college student states “music helps me before a test because it’ll get me into my right mind and get myself prepared”. It also helps me when I’m really stressed like for example I work at target and I work really long hours and when I get off work the first thing I do is to sit in my car for 30 mins and sit back and listen to music. “I listen to different types of music but my go to music is r&b music”. “It’s just something about R&B music that just touches down in my soul”. “I don’t listen to it 24/7 because I know the repercussions of listening to it so much”. “Some music be having spiritual messages, some good and some are bad so I try to only listen to old school music because most of their music is a whole lot more spiritually good and imposed to now and days where all they rap or sing about is sex, violence, and guns”. “But for the most part music has served me justice with getting through sad, tuff, happy, and chill times”.
I interviewed my mother Lakisha Cox and she states, “music helps me to a certain extent, I just can’t listen to music all day everyday”. “I mainly listen to music when I’m riding in the car with someone”. “I listen to a lot of H town, Anita Baker, just all these old school music you young people don’t know about”. “My go to music when I’m cleaning is gospel because that’s what gets me started in the morning and it also gets everyone in that mood too”. “The modern-day music I listen to is drake, lil baby, Megan the stallion, them type of people”. “From my knowledge music helps you stimulate your brain and get into the type of mood you want to be in”. “my go to is jazz music because that will really calm me down after a long day of either working, studying or dealing with yawl kids”. “I don’t like rap cause all they talk about is irrelevant stuff and the songs are pointless”. “I don’t listen to music because another to help me escape is to go to sleep”.
