People who listen to Youngboy; do you consider yourself to be versatile in your music? To have a good music taste in my opinion you have to listen to different artist, different genres, recognize that certain flow each artist uses. Be open to listening to other styles. On August 22nd, 2022, I conducted an interview around my school asking various students about their music taste, what they look for in an artist and songs. I received a variety of different answers some that aligned with my ideas and some that were the opposite of what I was thinking.
Ahmoni Mayo, a Senior at Hillgrove High school shared her thoughts with me when I asked her some questions about versatility of her music. She gave me some artist she listens to which are Jhene Aiko, Lil Baby, Lil Durk, and Lucky Daye. A good artist is usually able to have endless styles to draw upon. Ahmoni helps confirm this by saying this about her artist, “They typically switch theirs flows but only on certain types of songs.” Amongst Ahmoni’s top 3 she discussed Jhene AIiko, who she considers to carry her musical genre “Jhene Aiko is probably my favorite, she definitely carries the genre she is under because she makes music that people can relate to”. Concluding from this interview someone like Ahmoni Mayo is someone I would rely on for good music taste or having a knowledgeable conversation about music.
Bryant Pain as well attends Hillgrove Highschool and is in the Junior class is someone who pays attention to his music to make sure he is listening to something he likes “I like different flows, something I can vibe to, some turnt stuff, some slow jams”. From this I can tell that Bryant has very versatile music. He doesn’t just listen to one artist or one style, rather he listens to anything that pleases his ears.
Zion Anderson a Sophomore at Hillgrove Highschool. compared to the other interviewees I wouldn’t say Zion has versatility in his music but more so versatility in the genre he listens to which is Rap/Hip-Hop. “My top 3 are Lil Baby, Anti, and YoungBoy.” He claims that nobody is better than his top 3 because they are “unique and different.”. However, these same rappers are commonly seen as “overhyped and overplayed” by the media and public.
Summing some things up that I gathered from the different interviews I had and the different answers I got, for the most part many students agree that to have a good music taste you need to have versatility in your music and the artist you listen to. Just listening to one artist and one genre you don’t have much flexibility in your taste, therefore you can’t really share an opinion when it comes to who is better, or who has the best flow. Therefore, as I and many other people believe, your opinion is flawed.
