Books in 2018 have been a great source of entertainment and thoughtful conversations whether it was the racially charged YA novel The Hate U Give, the sweet and heartfelt coming of age and coming out story of Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens, or even the life threatening romance of Everything, Everything. However a new book has come out to join the ranks and this one is sure to be crowd pleaser. Former First Lady Michelle Obama has finally released her highly anticipated memoir, Becoming Michelle Obama.
Anyone who has ever heard of the Chicago born Princeton graduate who later on became the first African-American First Lady knows she has quite a story to tell. In her memoir, Obama (maiden name was Robinson) chroncilizes her humble beginnings in her Chicago neighborhood under the eye of her homemaker mother and her father, a city pump operator who suffered from M.S or Multiple Sclerosis, and her older brother Craig who is known in some circles as a pretty great basketball player. (That is if you consider being a two time Ivy League Player of the year good.) After going to Chicago’s first magnet high school and graduating salutatorian, Robinson later went on to Princeton University graduating with a Bachelors in Sociology. She then went on to Harvard Law School, a good choice considering that because of her Harvard Law connections, she wound up at the firm where she would find her future husband and future President of the United States, Barack Obama. From then on the book recounts how she stepped into the role of a lifetime and how she managed to raise two daughters while doing it.
In addition to the book release, she will be going on a book tour and moderators like Valerie Jarrett, Oprah Winfrey, Tracee Ellis Ross, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Reese Witherspoon will also be in attendance. Unfortunately, her tour does not include Atlanta but if you still want to read an inspiring and compelling book, Becoming Michelle Obama can be found on Amazon or at a bookstore near you. Happy reading!
