Megan is Missing became a trend on Tiktok during early November 2020. Which is strange considering the movie was released in December 2011. The reason why the film has resurfaced on the internet is because a creator on Tiktok decided to make a challenge by recording your reaction before and after you watch Megan is Missing. The film is about two girl best friends, Amy, and Megan. They do everything together, but one day one of the girls. (Megan) goes missing.
Most viewers find this film is quite disturbing, especially for younger viewers. The program includes profanity, gore, and sexual scenes. According to fifteen years old Anthony Smith, “They showed two little girls getting tortured and buried in a barrel.” The film also includes rape and torture. The movie was overall disturbing from beginning to end. The teens in this film do not act their age; over the course of this film viewers may see instances of partying, substance abuse, and sexual situations.
The purpose of the film is for viewers to understand that social media can be dangerous for anyone. In some cases, social media can lead to kidnappings and things of that nature.. Social media can have positive and negative effects on today's society. Social media is a way some creators communicate with their supporters and influence them. However, social media can have a lot of hateful comments, posts, and people. The movie is based on many cases of what happens to young girls who meet people on the internet and how some users use it to prey on young teens. If you are ever in the event that you are willing to or have to meet someone you met online, be extremely cautious. Tell someone where you’re going and share your location with them. While paying close attention to the character Josh, he has set many examples of what a catfish would say. A student at Hillgrove, Camryn states, "The character Josh kept on making excuses on why his camera was not working, and he would keep on forgetting what to say and also he did not meet up with Megan when she was with her friends.”
Overall, the film, Megan is Missing, is a great film to learn from, but certain scenes were disturbing. The film is easy to find on YouTube and has many versions of the movie. Although the movie is a great example of why not to meet people from the internet, it fails to bear a good script as well as good acting. This movie would have been better, perhaps, if the producer or director had further researched these types of stories.
