The Legacy of Ruth Bader Ginsburg
By Thea Liss
Ruth Bader Ginsburg was the first woman to serve on the Supreme Court. RBG passed
on September 18th, 2020, at the age of 87 from complications of metastatic pancreatic cancer.
Her passing has impacted and will continue to impact gender equality and women's rights to
future generations.
Joanne Hicok, a retired nurse stated that, “I have been inspired by Ruth Bader Ginsburg
and the mark she has left, especially for women's rights.” When asked if she knew RBG's dying
wish, she knew. Ruth's desire, "my most fervent wish is that I will not be replaced until a new
president is installed." “Ruth is known for fighting for women's rights and gender equality.”
Nick Cindric, an art gallery owner, had many thoughts on RBG and her mark on the
country. One of her claims to fame is that “she was the first woman to be appointed to the
Supreme Court and her continued passion for fighting against gender discrimination.” Since the
passing of RBG, “President Donald J. Trump has nominated Amy Coney Barrett to fill the Supreme Court opening. This will still need to pass through the U.S. Senate.”
Benjamin Hicok, a retired attorney, commented on why it was so crucial that RBG was
appointed to the Supreme Court. “One, being the first Jewish woman, but she was part of the
team that convinced the Supreme Court that widowers should be entitled to survivor's benefits as
widows under the Social Security system.” They had been previously denied those benefits. She
believed in equal treatment for all. He is concerned that with Ruth's passing that “there may be a
good chance that the new composition of the Supreme Court will cut back on protections for
reproductive rights for women, both in relation to abortion and contraception.” He also thinks
that, “there is a reasonable chance that the Supreme Court may now seek to reverse previous
decisions that protected marriage equality and voting rights, as well as environmental protection
and the Affordable Care Act.”
Ruth Bader Ginsburg will have a place in everyone's heart; she has made a mark on this
world; and she has fought for what was right. She was hard-working, kind; she fought to stay as
long as she could. Everyone has their own opinion on Ruth Bader Ginsburg not everyone is
going to love her, but she will be greatly missed in this world. “Women will only have true
equality when men share with them the responsibility of bringing up the next generation.”~Ruth
Bader Ginsburg.
