What's Trending

High schoolers are very easily influenced. They draw their inspiration from celebrities, public figures, and each other. Everybody has different personal style, but trends can be seen all across the school.
Celebrities know how to brand themselves. Every high school student has a celebrity that they idolize in some form or another, and everyone has a style icon. For sophomore Kendall Cleveland, it is actress Blake Lively. Hillgrove junior Demiya Akinwande chose Ellie Thurman, and senior Jacob Morris decided on Tyler the Creator. Influence from these celebrities can be seen in the way the students present themselves.
High school boys are creatures of habit. Generally speaking, they get up, throw on a tshirt, and go to school. Kendall’s opinion on guys fashion trends was that, “It’s too casual. They should dress up more.” However, there are exceptions. Demiya reported, “Some guys are actually pretty good dressers, they accessorize very nicely.” Jacob stated, “They all seem like they’re trying to fit in. They need to stand out and be themselves.” He felt the same about ladies trends. Kendall Cleveland agreed, saying “they [high school girls] all dress very trendy.”
While trends are always followed, they are not always… good. Throughout the years, there have been some pretty ugly trends in the Hillgrove hallways. Jacob, Kendall, and Demiya all had differing opinions on what the worst one so has been. Jacob went with “crocs”, Kendall chose “tiny sunglasses” and Demiya reported her least favorite trend has been “saggy pants.” When asked to predict what the next big trend will be, the three students did not have to think for long. Their answers were: “Zippers”, “Crazy colored jeans”, and “People are going to stop wearing ripped jeans.” So who knows, maybe all three will be trending this time next year!
Kendall likes to keep her style casual, describing it as “lazy.” Jacob referred to his as “hip.” Demiya called hers “bohemian.” However, a common place to shop has reportedly been Goodwill.
Trends come and go, but there would be none without the trendsetter. The trendsetter, whether they know it or not, ultimately decides how other people will be dressing. Jacob Morris said if he could start his own trend, it would be “Palm tattoos.” Demiya would choose to make hats trendier, and Kendall would like to “Bring back oversized sweaters.”
Anyone can be a trendsetter, all it takes is a bold move or two.
