So far 2018 has been great for the movies and movie lovers. From sold out action packed movies like Black Panther, Red Sparrow, The Maze Runner: Death Cure, and Den of Thieves to tug your heart out romances like Forever My Girl and Call Me By Your Name. However there is one upcoming movie that people can not wait to see the return of one British archaeologist and explorer: Lara Croft.
Lara Croft: Tomb Raider was based on the popular video game franchise Tomb Raider which was created in 1996. Croft was designed and created by a man named Toby Gard, who initially wanted a “male Indiana Jones” before going through several changes and finally landing on Croft. Her back story includes her being the daughter of English nobility and while there are differing accounts of how she became the Tomb Raider, the most consistent thing seems to be her following the footsteps of her father, Lord Richard Croft. Lara’s character was developed into a young woman who was extremely athletic, highly intelligent, and an overall fearless adventurer and archeologist. Since the release of the franchise was so popular, Croft was turned into a feature length film in 2001 starring Angelina Jolie as the British heroine (in this movie, she had to stop the illuminati). The movie did pretty well at the box office and despite mixed reviews about the lack of a storyline, there was enough success to spawn a sequel Lara Croft Tomb Raider:The Cradle of Life, which did okay with the reviews and box offices.
However, since we are in an era of reboots as far television and movies go, Hollywood has decided to try bring the fearless explorer back to the big screen, this time casting Academy Award winner Alicia Vikander as the titular character. Not much is known about the plot, but from what those previews shows, you can bet it will not be boring. Lara Croft Tomb Raider is set to be released March 16, so get your tickets why you can.
