The Hillgrove Lady Hawks Lacrosse Team has many exceptional players and a very impressive record. The Talon caught up with a few of the stand-out players to find out more about what it is like to be on the team. Their years of experience ranged from four to eight years.
For sophomore Maddie Townson, who plays attack, an average practice looks like “a lot of drills.” Senior player Bria Pope, a goalie, says that her practices consist of “stretching, a warm up lap, warm up shots, then drills, and maybe a scrimmage at the end.” For freshman Emily Bond, a defensive player, an everyday practice starts off with “the same warm up, passing and catching, running, and then we go into skills and drills, then team bonding.” Bria believes playing lacrosse helps to make her a better student because, “I have to manage my time better because during the spring, practices are right after school and it’s usually a couple hours which is pretty time consuming, so I have to get my work done.”
According to Maddie, one of her biggest weaknesses in lacrosse is that she gets down on herself if she does something wrong. Bria’s two major weaknesses would be “clearing which is like throwing the ball out once I’ve saved and completing short passes.” Emily said, “My weakness is keeping my comments to myself.”
Maddie’s favorite memory while playing lacrosse is the people. Bria’s favorite memory with Hillgrove Lacrosse is “Definitely making it. I was with the team the first time they made it to Sweet 16, so that was pretty amazing, like everyone was bawling.” Emily recalled how much fun she had riding the bus with her teammates.
Maddie enjoys playing lacrosse because she says it keeps her active. Bria says she likes to play lacrosse because, “It’s definitely something that teaches me a lot about friendship and you get to know your teammates and it’s people I would never associate with outside of school, so you get to see them in the hallways and it’s nice.” Emily said that she enjoys playing lacrosse because she likes the girls and the coaches.
The Hillgrove High School Lady Hawks Lacrosse Team is beginning to plan and prepare for another great upcoming season this year. The Lady Hawks had a great season last year and their coaches are hoping to continue their winning streak.
