Melanie Martinez is an alternative singer, who was also a contestant on the voice. She is twenty four years old and officially has two albums and four EP’s. Martinez released her new album, K-12, on September 6, 2019, and she had a film that was an hour and a half to go with it. The album has thirteen songs with titles relating to the school atmosphere. Some songs included are “Wheels On the Bus,” “The Principal,” and “Detention.”
Martinez has come out with many songs that have made her listeners very happy. There are also specific songs that may be a listener's favorite, “Recess” being Sumairah Khan’s. Faith Whittaker says her favorite song is “Orange Juice”, and Camille Blackwell favors “Strawberry Shortcake”. Blackwell states, “I don’t have a least favorite song. I think all her songs are really good,” but Whittaker and Khan disagree. Whittaker states, “I’d have to say ‘Highschool Sweethearts’” and Khan said “Mmm, ‘Wheels on the Bus’, right?”
In Martinez’s K-12 album, she has a lot of symbolic and societal problems presented in her music and the film. One being an African-American male not standing for the Pledge of Allegiance: “Oh, to signify the thing with Colin Kaepernick, right?... And when he didn’t stand up for the pledge because of- he like took a knee and yea. I think she was trying to incorporate the racial discrimination,” Khan explains. Another problem presented in the film was a woman being fired from her teaching position for being transgender: “I guess to show a representation of the LGBT community,” Whittaker thinks. Khan thinks, “Uh, to highlight the issues in today's society around the stigmas of transgender people and like the discrimination against them.” In one of Martinez’s songs, “Show and Tell”, she says “Lie and sell (lie and sell me baby) like I’m a product of society.” This could signify anything. Blackwell thinks, “That [this lyric means] people pass other people around, and use people to get what they want.”
Melanie Martinez has been through a lot in her life, from being held to rape charges, and criticized how she expresses herself through her music. “I don’t think [the rape accusations] were true,” Whittaker says. Melanie Martinez is obviously not your typical artist. “I think she’s a really real person. A lot of singers and like, people who are in higher places are not really like, real and truthful,” Blackwell states. Whittaker says, “I like her music cause it’s like different, and it's not like your regular clique pop music.” Overall Martinez is showing real life problems through her music, and is being a relatable artist by being her true authentic self.
