It Did Not Have To Be This Way…. By: Kaya Wilson
Jerry Harris Netflix’s ‘Cheer’ star was arrested on charge of production of child phonography. He was arrested on Thursday after Mr. Harris kept repeatedly asking a 13 year old boy to produce sexually explicit videos and photos of himself. The actor was arrested in Chicago, and after a telephone hearing in federal court his lawyers have asked to postpone a decision on whether he’ll be released on bond. The FBI is still looking for victims under the age of 18 to see if Harris asked them to send sexually explicit photos or videos.
Many fans were shocked by this story. Janelle Jackson, a Delta employee stated, “I can’t believe people that you envy can turn out to let you down.” She wishes if the charges are true the kids involved receive justice. Many of Harris’s cast members were also unhappy and saddened by the news. Billie Billups who owns her own zero balancing company stated, "They should do their own investigation and see what actually happened. Go further into the investigation and see what the allegations are then make a statement after they check everything out.” They will most likely re- cast his part because it would look bad on the company Netflix if they just ignore his actions. Netflix will probably release a statement on behalf of the TV series and how it will proceed in the future.
Isaiah Wilson, who works for the government stated, “That is horrible, if it is true why is he doing child porn!?” He was very outraged, and confused by the news on why a Netflix actor would be involved with this. He believes they should re-cast Jerry’s role, because it won’t be good for Netflix to continue working with someone who has child sexual allegations against him. Wilson also stated, “Depending on how close they were to him, his cast was probably shocked, disgusted, or overall had mixed emotions.” Another popular ‘Cheer’ cast member Gabi Butler shared her thoughts saying, “Like most of you, I am shocked, dismayed and deeply saddened by the recent news.” The FBI is still checking out this case while Harris is still held in custody. This TV series will most likely resume but without Harris if the allegations are true. It will be interesting how they will address it on the series. They will probably tell the truth straightforwardly or make up a new plot. Similar to what they did on Riverdale with Fred Andrews who was played by Luke Perry when he passed away.
If Jerry Harris is guilty of the sexual allegations against him he should be held accountable. Netflix will most definitely re-cast, and probably briefly address it while moving forward. It is almost certain that production has stopped not only because of the coronavirus pandemic, but now as well with an actor being in custody.
