The use of plastic has increased exponentially over the years, due to this there has been an increase in single use plastic waste. Because of this waste, the environment has suffered many problems such as ocean pollution, air pollution, and dying ecosystems. The damage caused by sole use plastics is not something to be taken lightly and there are many things we can do to prevent the decline of our environment. For example, recycling, reducing our use of single use plastic, and reusing plastic for other purposes.
About ninety one percent of plastic is not recycled, (Earth Day) meaning that the plastic is discarded into landfills and will end up somewhere it is not supposed to be. If more of the population can recycle and or reuse the plastics that they buy it would have a tremendous impact on the environment. “I use some single-use plastic products, like bottles, but I am trying to reduce this use by bringing a reusable bottle or cup when I know I am going somewhere with a drink machine” (Jennie Matos junior at Lovett). The impact we have on our planet will affect us and future generations, so what we do now matters.
For years, large corporations have persuaded us that single-use plastic is essential to the fast-paced, consumer-driven lifestyle they are imposing on us, yet when most single-use plastic is simply burned and contributes to greenhouse gas emissions, they present us with deceptive alternatives for disposing of plastic, such as recycling. Now that these corporations are starting to see the damage they have done, they realize they need alternatives to their single-use plastics. “I think it's a great way to reduce their reliance of single use plastic especially since a lot of these places use a ton of plastic” (Jennie Matos). Some companies have switched to biodegradable plastic ware to reduce their carbon footprint, however that does not account for the fact that most companies have not, and some continue to overproduce the harmful plastics that detrimentally impact wildlife and marine life. “Plastic harms and endangers all our wildlife, there is even scientific proof that plastic has caused problems for the ecosystems” (Shani Lofton Junior at Hillgrove).
There is a large amount of people who care about the environment and the wellbeing of our planet for future generations, however there are more people who are unaware of the impact they have on the planet. If we can come together to create solutions to the issues that the past generations created, then we can build a stable ecosystem for the future of the world.
