This past Saturday on November 25th, college football fans watched the Auburn Tigers shock the world and defeat the college football juggernaut known as the Alabama Crimson Tide. Coming into the week Alabama had cruised to an undefeated record of 11-0. Prior to this week Auburn had not defeated Alabama in their annual show downs since the infamous “Kick Six” back in 2013, but Auburn was set on breaking the streak.
On this fateful Saturday, Auburn would go on to defeat Alabama with a score of 26 to 14. Auburn’s win was supported by strong outings from team leaders Kerryon Johnson (104 rushing yards, 1 passing touchdown) and Jarrett Stidham (237 passing yards, 1 rushing touchdown). Kerryon Johnson’s performance was truly impressive and Hillgrove Senior Mark Pyryt described Johnson as a “true monster. He was unstoppable”. After starting off the season 5-2, the Tigers have rallied to win five straight games and defeat two undefeated #1 ranked teams as well. This is an extraordinary feat and it has not gone unnoticed by the College Football Playoff Committee who have bestowed the Tigers with the #2 seed. Auburn is now the first two-loss team to ever be ranked in the top four in the college football playoffs, but they have earned their spot. After the game concluded the fans proceeded to storm the field and this drew a mixed reaction. Many viewers saw this as a group of excited fans who wanted to celebrate an emotional win with the team. Unfortunately the SEC did not share the same warm sentiment as the fans, and the SEC proceeded to fine Auburn $250,000 for this incident.
The Auburn Tigers will go on to play the Georgia Bulldogs on December 3rd at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium for the SEC championship. Many believe that the winner of this game will lock in a ticket to the playoffs and many Auburn fans are hoping to make history and solidify their spot as the first ever two-loss team in the playoffs. This will certainly be a tough matchup, given that this is a rematch from earlier in the year and Georgia has their pride on the line since they were embarrassed last time out. If all goes right, Auburn can keep marching forward and Toomer’s Corner can live to be tee peed another night.
