Band class is a place where young musicians can meet with people who have similar skills and hobbies. Have you ever wondered about the kids who play at your football games or play during your pep rallies? Here’s a look into Hillgrove band. First to be able to get into a 9th grade band course you must complete the Lovinggood band course. “In the 6th grade we focused on the basics of your instrument. How exactly to make noises and the basic notes like G, B and A. Then in the 7th grade you would focus on certain types of beats, for example: triplets, upbeats and downbeats. Since the 8th grade was cut short because of COVID we jumped straight into sheet music. It’s a lot slower than a 9th or 10th grade class", said Mckayla Nowlin, a 10th grader in Hillgrove marching band. She says a normal class day would be like Reading sheet music and practicing your instrument basically”. Practicing is a huge part of band whether you’re in marching band or not.
A new percussion class has been introduced and it’s mainly for concert practice. “Foundational class for concerts basically helps our first-year students get used to their instrument.” voiced a senior in marching band, Tristan Marks. Concerts or the LPEs are used as a grading tool for the school: “The judges score you by how you play. The scores were 1-5. 1 being the best and 5 being the worst. If you just show up, you get 100% anyway. The LPEs are more for the school than the students”. said Rebecca Moore, a former band student. Students outside of band also have a strong opinion of it. Sam Tominey, a student at Hillgrove says, “Band is cool, it gives anyone who’s interested in music a good chance to connect with others who like to play and a good chance to practice more often.” Young musicians at Hillgrove can interact with other people who like their interests and share their skills in band class. They work hard so they can develop their skills and deliver to you.
