Human trafficking is the action or practice of illegally moving one person, (against their will), to another location for the purpose of forced labor or sexual exploitation. Human Trafficking is a modern-day form of slavery. According to the International Labor Organization, “ There are 40.3 million victims of human trafficking. Eighty-one percent of them are trapped in forced labor, and 75 percent of them are women and girls. The ILO estimates that forced labor and human trafficking is a 150 million dollar industry world wide.” There are some many young men and women who are going through these horrid, inhumane situations around the world. Human sex trafficking has gotten out of hand. Just recently, a young 15 year old girl called 911 at 6 am and reported that she was forced to have sex with several men and was threatened with death if she ran away. The police captured and arrested four people on Monday after search warrants were executed for two guest rooms at the Days Inn at 2191 Northwest Parkway in Marietta. Many people were shaken by this police report considering how close it is to home.
Michelle Aliu is a sophomore at Hillgrove High School. She states, “ Forcing women to continuously have intercourse with random men for money. Scared because she’s so young and it’s close to home.” Many young girls are taken and exploited for human trafficking, and because there was a recent sex trafficking case many people are alert. She says, “ Yes, I am getting one soon for safety reasons.” There are many tools able to prevent these human traffickers from getting to your sister, your brother, and even yourself. There is pepper spray, tasers, home security, window alarms, etc. There are many other precautions teenagers need to take. Human trafficking predators often lurk on social media, where many teenagers spend their time. Aliu states, “ Oh yeah especially with posting my location.”
Haily Simpson is a sophomore at Hillgrove High School. She has a few words to say about human trafficking. She states, “ When someone is forced to do work for someone else against their will. To be honest we don’t talk about it, we talk more about drugs and alcohol.” Many schools do not make their students aware of human trafficking, so it is up to the teens. Simpson says, “ Um, maybe instead of like meeting up at a busy place, like say you want to go the movies or the mall or something you go there as a group and, like you just have to be more careful on how you plan stuff so that way you're not alone.” Many predators target young adults when they are alone. Even when going to a public restroom, it is always safer to go with a friend. And for those who ever find themselves in that situation, the United States provides a National Human Trafficking Hotline (1 888 373-7888).
