Last Sunday was the 60th Grammy Awards Show and with star studded performers like Rihanna, Kendrick Lamar, Lady Gaga, Kesha, and SZA, it was truly a night to remember. Bruno Mars really cleaned up snagging Grammys for Song of the Year, Album of the Year, and Record of the Year followed by Ed Sheeran who scored Best Pop Solo Performance and Best Pop Vocal Album. Even Kendrick Lamar got some love getting Grammys for Best Rap Song, Best Rap Album, and Best Rap/Sung Performance (with Rihanna).
While the award show was one for the record books, many have voiced their opinions that despite the Grammys supporting the Times Up and #MeToo Movements, there was a lack of representation of women when it came to the awards.
The only woman to receive a solo Grammy was Alessia Cara and that was for Best New Artist. People also pointed out that Lorde was the only nominee for Album of the Year that was not asked to perform solo as well. The situation escalated when the president of the Grammys Neil Portnow remarked that “Women who have the creativity in their hearts and souls, who want to be musicians, who want to be engineers, producers and want to be part of the industry on the executive level need to step up.” Celebrities like Pink and Kelly Clarkson took to twitter to defend women, saying they have been stepping up for a long time.
Besides the political drama, many people enjoyed the Grammys, considering 19.8 million people tuned in to see Bruno Mars claim the night. So what were the Grammy’s like? What was the best part? Who was your favorite performer? A hillgrove student shared her thoughts. “I thought it was fun you know to watch, to see everyone you know win award,” said Nyjah Gaither, who particularly enjoyed the rendition of “Finesse” with Cardi B and Bruno Mars.
So when you sum up the night: you get entertaining performances, the fight for gender equality, and the message that music really does influence our world. Let's see how the Grammys top this next year.
