September 22nd was the start of fall this year and although fall brought us crisp winds and orange leaves it also brought us a whole new list of homecoming nominees. Homecoming was started on college campuses back in the 19th century, although no one knows for sure which college started the original homecoming. University of Missouri, Mizzou, the University of Texas, and the University of Illinois all take some type of credit. The original idea behind homecoming is to have a place for high school alums to come back to, thats why its called homecoming. To prepare for the “alums coming home” and to hype school spirit most schools have a spirit week and a homecoming court. Although Hillgrove has an amazing homecoming presentation, some other schools go all out. In high schools throughout Texas they have the tradition of making their dates mums, a large corsage made from silk flowers and ribbon. Girls receive large mums thats fit on a girl like a dress and boys receive a garter which is smaller version on their dates mum that they get to wear on their arms.
This year Heaven Varner and Mollie Robertson two sophomores nominated for homecoming court share some of their thoughts on homecoming and it’s meaning. “I think {homecoming} is a lot about school spirit.” says Mollie Robertson. “ I feel like homecoming is a time for everybody to get together and show spirit for there school and represent that we’re all a part of this school even whether we're freshmen, seniors, or somewhere in between we all have a place here and we all can all, you know, have some fun together and enjoy ourselves.” adds Heaven Varner.
Homecoming court is a tradition that many schools adopt at homecoming, but sometimes students believe court has a tendency to attract the most popular and pretty people in their class. [based on popularity] Heaven has her own thoughts on the subject, ”I think some people can take it to far and some people can make it more than it is. But I think the meaning of Homecoming court is just the person that you feel like has the personality not the look or the social status. But someone who can represent our school in a positive way. Mollie added’ “ Maybe freshman year it probably based on popularity, none of us really know each other very well yet but I think later on the people who like actually deserve it will start to get on because people will realize who, or who is like good and stuff.” But how do you get nominated for court. What qualities does someone need to posses to get nominated? Heaven believes she was nominated because [she] “I make an effort to make people feel good on a daily basis [and because] I’m kind and nice to everyone” “[But] “I don’t want [it to sound like I] gloat on myself. Mollie believes she is a generally nice person and does stuff for the good of people, but Heaven thinks she was nominated because she loves her”
Even though these two are nominated for court neither have bought their dress yet. Last year Mollie bought her dress the day of homecoming from Francesas, but both of them agree if they make court they will have a parade dress and a dress for the dance. Both of them also believe it does not matter where you buy your dress. “Walmart has some great dresses, Goodwill, four dollar dresses are just as good as two dollar dresses.
This year the homecoming dance will take place on October 21st.
