Homecoming is a high school, college or university game, dance or other events to which former students are invited. This event is usually in the fall. All grade levels can attend homecoming. This dance is mostly for students to have fun and dress up. Students usually get ready, dress up, go eat, and take pictures, then head their way to where the homecoming is being held. These school dances are usually taken place in the school’s cafeteria. Students get so excited when this time of year comes around, the majority start planning since September.
Some girls usually never want to attend the school dance because they feel the need to have a date. Girls see how other girls get asked by guys with posters that have cute and sweet sayings like, “You will brighten up my day if u say yes to homecoming?” They feel like they would have a better time with a date. Emily Bond, a sophomore, at Hillgrove High School, believe that girls do not need a date in order to have fun. Emily states, “Probably go with friends because it’s kind of a weight off your shoulders and you don’t have to worry about pleasing anyone because you’re with a group and there’s more of an opportunity to have fun.” It is easier to dress the way you want to dress because you do not need to find matching colors or debate on what color or where you all must meet. If u are usually going with friends, you all can get ready at someone's house and drive to the place where you can take pictures. Genesis Allah, a senior at Hillgrove High School, says it just depends on the person. She explains, “It really just depends on the person like you can’t, like if a boy asks you and like you really don’t know the boy and your friends ask you to go with them, go with them. It’s going to be more fun with them, but if the boy is your boyfriend then that’s a whole different story, pshh go with him.” Either way, the only thing that really matters is to have fun, with or without a date.
Even though homecoming is about having fun, it can still be expensive. Buying dresses, heels, paying to get hair and makeup, and buying tuxedos is already enough to pay for. On top of that, you have to pay for tickets to attend the school dance. Last year, some people were able to avoid paying for a ticket due to having sport passes. Depending on grade level sport passes can range from about $75-$100, which some students either cannot afford or do not want to pay all of that every year. It is only for one person, it cannot be shared among family. Having these can get you in for free, but some students do not have these, so they must pay for entrance. Emily Bond, a Sophomore at Hillgrove High School, believes that it is reasonable for students to pay because of all the work that is put into homecoming. She states, “Yes, it is reasonable because it costs money to put it on, but if we are already paying for students’ dues than that should cover it, which it does for this one.” Even though homecoming can be expensive, do not try to think about the cost but instead about going all out and enjoying the time there.
Overall, homecoming is a fun experience where students can go and be themselves. Have fun and do not think about anything but having the best time of your life. With or without a date, go and show out. Pop out and look good.
