Many people think of homecoming as what they show in teen movies. Homecoming might not be as fun as how it looks in those movies, but it still unites the students together and is something students can look forward to. The definition of homecoming is the tradition of welcoming back alumni or other former members of an organization to celebrate the organization's existence. Homecoming is supposed to bring students and members of a school together to celebrate their school and to make fun memories, but does Hillgrove’s homecoming meet this goal?
“It is very loud and crazy. I think they could do better like getting better music, food, and more of a reason to be there so it seems more engaging.” says Landen Ballentine, a senior at Hillgrove. Landen has gone to homecoming three times and according to him it hasn’t changed. Homecoming is supposed to unite students, yet students are still either in their own groups or stick to themself, “I have not been to homecoming yet, but I think it will be fun except with the different cliques and "mean girls".” Karissa Miller, a freshman at Hillgrove, has heard about how ununited the dance is which causes uneasy, nervous feelings about not fitting in. The homecoming football game unites the students more than the dance does, by everyone rooting for the same team despite their differences.
Students who do not regularly attend football games attend the homecoming game simply because it is something different. Hillgrove usually announces the homecoming court and at the parade before the game, and the homecoming king and queen are revealed. On contrast, this year is different. The homecoming dance is kicking off homecoming week, and the football game ends the week. However, students are not too excited about this change, “I feel like the dance should be after the game and spirit week,” says Karissa Miller. This year’s homecoming is also different because the dance is alice in the wonderland themed, yet “I don’t think people will really dress on theme” Karissa Miller wonders what the purpose of having a theme is when no one will participate. She thinks it would be better if it were a more laid back and easy theme.
Even though there are things schools can work on to make homecoming better, it is still pretty significant and gives you a fun break from life and school for a couple of hours. Homecoming is an event to make memories even though it can be a lot, from the stress of where pictures should take place to the drama that follows two girls buying the same dress and the creative ways people ask someone to be their date. Anyone can have an enjoyable time, it's what you make of it. Overall, homecoming is one high school tradition that many students seem to remember and hold onto long after high school is over.
