As Holiday season approaches, it's about that time to get into the talk of what we are doing for this holiday season. But apart from Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's, there's so many more holidays that we all celebrate. These holidays are to be talked about throughout these interviews.
Lauren Hackney is a Junior (11) at Hillgrove. She loves Christmas and says it is her favorite Holiday. “I spend a lot of time with family and friends.”, She spoke. “I feel like holidays were a lot more like, kind of magical. You know? Like kind of magical a little bit? Because I believed in Santa and all that jazz.” Her Christmas traditions religiously consist of just going to church. Lauren does not really like Valentine's Day though, as she claims it's so stupid. “Honestly, Valentine's Day because it's so stupid” she said.
Larenzo Manuel is a Junior (11) at Hillgrove. He had some real thoughts on him vs Halloween. He said, “Halloween is cool, but you know, I can't go trick-or-treating anymore because you know, I'm 6'1, I am black I cannot walk up to nobody crib and walk up to their door and be like ‘Give me some candy’ you know, they are going to think I am trying to rob them.” Larenzo states he does not go to any public events for holidays, but he does like to get festive. “For Halloween I like to put you know, like some stuff in the yard and for Christmas, we have like a little countdown for our calendar.” He spoke. Larenzo loves the holiday season and loves to go black Friday shopping. He said, “I love black Friday because you know, clothes go on sale, and I will get me some drip. Cyber Monday, I don't know, Black Friday is just better.” Considering friends vs family during holiday season Larenzo said, “I feel like as you are a kid it's important to celebrate holidays with family, but when you are around like my age, it's more fun to celebrate holidays with friends.”
Kennadi is a senior (12) at Hillgrove. She had some “different” thoughts on Christmas and Thanksgiving. She said, "I like Christmas better because like in Thanksgiving, I don’t really like my family, so being around them that long is not that great, and Christmas is better because I actually get gifts, and even though I have to be around them, it okay because I get stuff.” She doesn’t do anything really for Christmas but wasn’t really her favorite holiday anyways. Her favorite holiday is Halloween. Her reason being, “Halloween because you get to dress up even though I really don’t do anything for Halloween if I did, I think it would be fun.” Regarding holidays, school makes her more excited about them because she's ready to go out and celebrate them. On her thoughts on holidays staying home vs leaving, she said, “It depends on the holiday. I do love going on vacation for the right holiday, probably for the 4th of July. I'd rather stay home for a holiday like Halloween.” Kennadi isn't in the spirit of holidays like she used to be, because of how she's getting older. She said, “It's just not the same. I don’t really get to go trick-or-treating anymore and now I just have to sit at home.” And for Christmas, she said, “I don’t get as much stuff and I'm not as happy, and I used to believe in Santa.”
So, holidays are fun and entertaining for some, but for others, they can be boring or sad. It all depends on how you take the holiday. There are holidays all year long, that people love, and there's holidays all year long that people hate. How do you celebrate holidays and which ones are your favorite?
