Have you ever wondered where the desk you sit in comes from, or where did half of your peers come from, and why they chose Hillgrove? Have you ever even stopped to think about how Hillgrove even got here in the first place?
Hillgrove High School opened in 2006 in the Cobb County school district. All 98 acres of Hillgrove’s land was donated to Cobb County by Henry Hill and Harriet Hargrove Hill. Before the Hills generously donated the land, in 1952 it was used to raise cattle and Tennesse Walking Horses. Hillgrove currently has over 2,000 students in grades 9–12.
Hillgrove’s vision is to prepare students with knowledge and values to become productive students. The mission statement is “Soaring toward deliberate success in academics, the arts, and athletic achievement.” Hillgrove believes that all students should have the opportunity to learn in a safe, supportive, and respectful environment. Also, the responsibility for learning is a partnership among students, teachers, parents, and community members. Another belief is that critical thinking skills enable all students to become effective and efficient decision-makers and that leads to students to achieve excellence in academics, co-curricular activities, and citizenship. Data-driven instruction is important as well to improve student achievement and that can be reached by enhancing learning through the use of technology.
Hillgrove wants the students to acquire skills necessary to become responsible and productive citizens. In 2017, Angela Stewart was appointed as the new principal of Hillgrove and the school has benefited greatly. She was principal of Lovinggood Middle School before she started at Hillgrove. She improved the new dress code, enforced a new mission statement, and new rules were put in place.
Many students were pleased with the new changes and how Hillgrove has evolved. Dani DaSilva, a senior at Hillgrove, has been through all the changes at Hillgrove. “I have been here 4 years and there have been changes but it has been beneficial.” Another student Katie Connelly has only been at the Hillgrove for a couple years but likes the rules. “The changes that have happened during the years has greatly improved Hillgrove.”
Through the years Hillgrove has improved educationally and academically. Hillgrove has been through struggles as well, like many schools they have had problems, but they have overcome all the obstacles they have come in contact with. Hillgrove has had many great years, there are going to be many more.
