This past week Hillgrove high school had their homecoming (Hoco)! The week was filled with exciting spirit days, a pep rally, parade and football game. Every year Hillgrove does spirit week and the parade, but this year there were some noticeable changes. The 2 biggest being the date of homecoming and the location of the pep rally. My school dance states that “homecoming is typically held in late September or early October.” This is a trend that has been followed until this year, with homecoming being in the middle of September compared to late October. Also due to the recent state of the world Hillgrove has not had a “normal” pep rally since 2019! Covid had prevented that many people being in an enclosed space, but this was the first one held in the basketball gym in 3 years. The pep rally had tug of war, a performance by Hillgrove’s varsity competition team, and more! The week was ended with an enthusiastic parade to get the community hyped about the upcoming football game. The Hillgrove Hawks beat the Campbell Spartans 29-7, bringing spirit week to a cheerful end, and a perfect transition into the dance.
“This was arguably one of the most successful spirit weeks that Hillgrove has had”, coming from current senior Cameron Jones. He explains that since covid everything has been different, and being a football player he enjoyed the school spirit during hoco week, he felt very appreciated. As a fellow student I can say that compared to last year more people participated in themed dress up days. “My favorite day this year was decades day, Me and a couple of friends dressed as a group from the 90s, I had so much fun!” From junior Larenzo Manuel.
