Hillgrove High School was established in 2006 in the Cobb County School District in Powder Springs, Georgia, United States. it has not been updated or added onto since then. Up until this past summer when they started construction on the school. “The work includes but is not limited to construction of a new classroom addition at Hillgrove High School, which includes the following: Demolition and removal of existing site improvements, underground utilities, and infrastructure. Selective demolition of existing building components. Sitework, including clearing and earthwork, site utilities, walks, paving and curb and gutter, landscaping, and grassing. Renovations to the existing Hillgrove High School at tie-in to new addition.” according to the construction company's website. This addition has many positives but also a few negatives.
When we asked students how they felt about the construction in their school, Ella Noren said, “I'm excited to have an updated school, but it's distracting at time, and it can potentially be dangerous for students and teachers in the school.” When asked, teachers in the math hall (next to the construction) said the noises are loud and there is always some type of banging or yelling. It can become distracting and make it harder to learn and focus on things. Lukas Power said, “I have trouble focusing on the work in front of me when all I hear is hammers banging or machines beeping, I feel like it's taking a toll on my grades.” Not only is it loud but it is dangerous for the students to be in the school during construction. For example, a couple weeks ago students had to evacuate certain classes because there were questionable smells coming from the construction site. After students evacuated the classrooms, students were told to stay in their second blocks for the rest of the day due to a potential gas leak from a construction worker hitting the pipe. Braxton Powell said, “it's disturbing that there's even the potential threat of something so dangerous when going to school, and the fact that it disrupted our whole day too, it shows how disruptive and dangerous it is.”
Besides all those negatives to it, the construction will bring many opportunities to the school, and it will help create a more comfortable teaching and learning environment for the school. The classroom additions allow for the school to hire more teachers and maybe create more unique classes. Do the pros outweigh the cons for this construction on projects.
