Hillgrove Cross country Varsity and JV boys and girls collectively took home several medals and trophies. Adelaide Ellis, Joseph Brooks, Matthew Odom, and Natalie Hall led their respective races to their team's overall win.
Freshmen runner Adelaide attributes part of her team's success from the encouragement from her teammates as she was racing: “the hill was hard, but I guess I just kind of ran up it and teammates being in the places you felt like you needed the most motivation like in the middle of the huge hill helped.” Furthermore, John Shepherd, a junior on the team emphasizes the importance of sticking together during a race and reciprocating the positive energy to others as he followed close behind Joseph Brooks in fourth place: “I just tried to stick with Jojo (Joseph Brooks) and it just showed me that I can do anything I put my mind to. It was a tough course so being able to finish it in 4th place made me happy.” It’s amazing how the support from teammates and the determination to stick together can lead to such incredible achievements!
This particular 3.11-kilometer-long race included a four-hundred-meter hill in the middle of the course. Layla Thurmond, a senior captain on the team comments on the magnitude of its size, “the big steep hill you can't miss it. It was so long.” Despite that huge obstacle, Hillgrove managed to collectively work together to get through it and is a true testament and example of the hard work and dedication spent training this summer.
As Hillgrove’s next weekend’s race is approaching, this race encouraged several runners like Adelaide looking forward to more future competition as she mentions, “It makes me want to win more” and for Layla she describes how, “placing definitely encourages me and lets me know I can do better.” This is Hillgrove’s second five kilometers races, and they look forward to many more races showing up, showing out, and competing to win!
