The Hillgrove boys varsity and junior varsity teams were very successful in their last season. Soccer is a spring sport, so the new tryouts will be in January and the season will continue through the rest of the school year. In 2019, the boys soccer went to State Playoffs and State Elite 8.
Aiden Boyle, a sophomore who played varsity last season, commented about the coaches and he said, “They gave everyone a chance and they worked with us on what we needed help with.” Along with the coaches being supportive, he mentioned the players as well, “It was good, I mean everybody was helpful and everything was always encouraging instead of bringing them down it was you’ll do better next time or good job.” The team seemed very supportive, but there are always things that players can work on personally. He said, “I don’t know, maybe like my defending skills and my passing range too.” There is always room for improvement as a student athlete. Advice and something to look up too can also be very beneficial and Aiden said, “I listen to the guys that are older than me and I remember that my spot is not guaranteed.”
Hillgrove also has the junior varsity team and Gabe Angle, a sophmore, played with them last season. The question of playing with a club team as well, Gabe said, “I play club in the off season which I prefer because I have gotten more opportunities and more playing time.” Playing during the off season can be very beneficial for athletes by gaining more skills and staying fit. Gabe explained, “It's good in my opinion, you get to stay with it and everything and stay fit.” Also, by working throughout the year, players improve a lot more. “I feel I have improved because I’ve gotten the true experience, but I also need to work on getting more stamina and better ball control.” Every player has skills they need to develop along with what they already do best.
David Stretch, a sophmore, played with junior varsity and he commented about the team, “I feel like we played terrible, we just didn’t work very well together and we just didn’t pass well.” Each player has their strengths and some teams just do not mix well together. With tryouts coming up in a few months, this is when athletes need to work on themselves to be the best possible player when tryouts come around. David said, “I’m playing club soccer which will help like grow my skills and stuff for tryouts.” The best part of every game is scoring and possibly winning, David described, “I enjoy scoring the most because everyone gets excited and your like proud of your team and yourself.” Scoring and winning is a very rewarding feeling.
The Hillgrove teams have done really well in the recent years. Every year, new talented players come and tryout and take the teams even farther. Many soccer athletes do similar things to prepare for the new season and work to get better.
