By: Peyton Curley
This week a new topic was brought on to the Hawks. They were asked about how they felt about women/ female sports programs in Hillgrove. They all have different and interesting ideas and thoughts. Many students feel strong about sports at Hillgrove High School, starting with…
Tyler Kirk, a Hillgrove sophomore and student athlete, asked about how girls felt about girls playing sports. He states, “I really enjoy them, and they are much underappreciated in school.” Women’s sports today are very much overlooked and taken for granted simply due to them being women. Tyler Kirk when asked, what his favorite Hillgrove women’s sport to watch, states “Volleyball, they play with so much passion and heart and its great to see women do what they love on the high school level.” This is true, with lots of sports students attending The Grove put all they have into what they love. Following that, Hillgrove high school student athletes playing sports is so great it shows students doing what they love with lots of passion and its great to go see what they do and go support Hillgrove sports and other programs in the school.
Nikki, a Hillgrove women’s Lacrosse athlete, was asked about how she felt about men coaching women’s sports. “I have no problem with it we have some very good coaches here.” This is backed up with articles and men coaching women’s sports from CNN. She believes that it all depends on if the coach respects the players and knows how to coach the game. Nikki was also asked on her opinions on Hillgrove sports women’s uniforms. “They are way to revealing and they should be changed as soon as possible.” Most uniforms are created by men and are purposely made this way, this is supported by a study from sports new article.
Tyler kirk says, “Women should be paid a lot more for doing the same thing as men and play the same sport and there is no reason, they should make a fraction of what men do.” This is backed up with an interview Megan Repino a women soccer athlete on team USA had and got a great movement started and made huge steps in the journey to getting women’s equal play. Lastly Nikki was also asked if they could add one sport to Hillgrove she answers tackle football, “I feel this can get girls to release a lot of anger and I feel they could be very good at it.”
Hillgrove students all have great opinions women’s sports and love talking about and supporting Hillgrove high school sports. Hillgrove women’s athletes are much to underappreciated and should get a lot more recognition
