Hawk Hour
Natalya Alfonso
You might question, ‘How do I catch up with all my schoolwork with sports after school and a busy school schedule?’ Hawk Hour is a day for catching up on missing work, tests, or quizzes. It’s a day to study for upcoming exams or even to catch up on some reading. Anything you can do to help you improve your grades or test scores. Students know that every Wednesday between 3rd and 4th period is when hawk hour will be in action. Every student that attends Hillgrove High School must sign up for the hawk hour class that will help them the most affectively academically
The first student to share her opinion was Nikaya, class of 2022. The new weekly change to hawk hour has been on Nikaya’s mind she tells, “Hawk Hour for me, it helps more than it would affect me negatively.” Meaning the new change didn’t change how hawk hour makes her feel. She still feels that hawk hour is nothing but helpful, nothing negative. But for people who don’t sign on time for hawk hour she says, “It's fair for irresponsible people, but for people who are good. I don’t think they deserve it.” When saying this, Nikaya’s feels that people who are smart, responsible students and have a lot more responsibilities than, let’s say undergraduates, should not have such a harsh punishment and they should be given a warning. But for the students who don’t play sports, do not work, and are easily lazy in all core classes with a low GPA deserve discipline. And lastly, she feels the best hawk hour for her personally is Creative Writing, with Mr. Broome. “Creative Writing is my favorite hawk hour because I could finish writing my novel.” She likes the ability to do the thing she loves and no worry about a teacher handing out work like in a core subject. It’s understandable for her to want a relaxation hour to write.
The next student with strong opinions is Alivia, a sophomore. She feels that hawk hour is extremely helpful to her. Most importantly with a math class for tutoring, she says with certainty, “Math because I struggle the most in that class.” She thinks that with hawk hour changing so quickly, weekly, people with constant struggles can switch hawk hours accordingly to what they need help on the most. She always has the best interest for her grades and GPA. She also says, “Any study hall, I can work on anything without getting more assigned work.” A lot of people feel this way because it gives students the chance to catch up on work, not fall behind more. Although some teachers might hand out work to students that have finished all work or have no upcoming tests or quizzes. Once you get the chance to have zero work done and no tests or quizzes and no extra assignments from current hawk hour teachers, it is relaxing to have the time to read or do things that you enjoy in the meantime. And the final thing Alivia said was, “The best way for me to choose hawk hour is to see my lowest grade and choose a class that will help me the most.” Alivia is referring to what hawk hour will help her the most. She is problem solving her low grades and taking advantage of the privilege Principal Stewart gave Hillgrove.
The last person who has thoughts on Hawk Hour is Lorena, a 10th grader. She speaks, “I enjoy Hawk Hour because it’s an hour to myself, if I don't have work to do, I will talk with my friends.” Digging deeper into the hour into herself portion. She claims that an hour is the perfect time to finish any missing work or to simply have a break from the stress and anxiety most students have from high school. Catching up with friends is harmless once you completed all your work and studied for any upcoming exams. “It's annoying when hawk hour teachers control students work and ability to study because, if I have work but I understand if I do have work” Lorena looks at all sides of a point of view. She sees the worry of teachers wondering if a student is procrastinating but she also sees the annoyance of students when a teacher is overbearing. This all comes down to trustworthiness and boundaries in her eyes. Next up, “A class that helps me improve the most is Chemistry, my teacher in that class doesn't help me often.” She thinks help or tutoring from other teachers with other teaching methods is an advantage. She says that Chem is one of her struggle subjects and tutoring helps her overall grade in that class. She appreciates the ability to see more help.
Many thoughts and opinions of many students at Hillgrove High School. Both all have a positive mindset on an immensely helpful and continually active Hawk Hour change. Don’t forget to sign up before every Tuesday Hawks!
