Harry Styles Makes History! By: Kaya Wilson
Harry Styles who is known for his extravagant fashion taste has made history by being the first solo male star to ever appear on Vogue. He is the first man to ever appear on the cover solo for the December 2020 issue. Since Vogue mainly favors women on the magazine cover, this cover sparked conversations around masculinity and gender dressing. Harry Styles has a history of breaking down barriers between men and women clothing, and over the years has deteriorated away from mens wear and started wearing more designs that are targeted to womens fashion. He has his own unique sense of fashion and appeared on December’s issue wearing a Gucci lace trimmed dress followed with a tuxedo suit jacket. Harry also wore a mix of menswear and womenswear inside the magazine. He wore a JW Anderson belt, paired with a Wales Bonner knitted sweater vest and kilted skirt. Another popular outfit featured was his Gridded overcoat, pussy-bow shirt, and checked pants all by Gucci. His cover had many reactions from fans and people worldwide.
Jacob Wilkins who is a sophomore at Marietta High school stated, “I understand how Harry Styles is a fashion icon and experiments with different items of clothing, but I do not think people should hate him for expressing who he is.” Styles choice of clothing is the most controversial topic on the December cover. Many people believe it is not manly for men to dress in clothing worn or targeted towards women. However, Chloe Bierds who is a senior at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University stated, “I love Harry Styles! He served us and made us all proud, clothes do not belong to one gender anyone can wear a piece of fabric.” Like Chole, many of Harry Styles fans are excited about this upcoming magazine and can not wait to see all of his outfits. Jordan Smith who is also a sophomore at Marietta High school stated, “I am so happy for Harry! He is making our 2020 better by becoming more successful day by day, he’s the best to be honest.” While many people expressed how happy they were, pro- Trump activist politician Candace Owens spoke out about Harry’s choice of style.
In a tweet on November 14th she shared she was claiming society would not be able to thrive without strong men. This tweet caused an eruption of people expressing their views, many agreeing with Owens, while people came out defending Harry Styles and men in general, who want to express themselves with femininity fashion. Some have even referred back to centuries ago on men wearing dresses in many parts of Europe. Harry Styles has shared his influence of his fashion with Vogue stating, “The people that I looked up to in music, Prince and David Bowie and Elvis and Freddie Mercury and Elton John they’re such showmen. As a kid it was completely mind-blowing. Now I will put on something that feels really flamboyant, and I do not feel crazy wearing it. I think if you get something that you feel amazing in, it is like a superhero outfit. Clothes are there to have fun with and experiment with and play with.” Styles goes on and talks more in depth about his inspiration, but he definitely paved the way for more solo males to be featured on Vogue.
