Hands Free: Concentration Over Conversation

The hands free law has made a new restriction for drivers throughout all of Georgia. On July 1st, 2018, the state of Georgia released a new law. This new law was put into effect in an effort to keep people from using their phones while driving. No driver is allowed to use any hand held electronic devices while behind the wheel of a car, with the exception of bluetooth. If you are caught using your phone while driving, you are eligible for a $100 fine or even jail time depending on if you were a part of an accident. Multiple offenses can cause higher fines or jail time with a longer sentence. With this new law, there has been many that agree with it, but also some that find it unnecessary.
After talking to current drivers, there were varying perspectives. Hannah Ward, a student who has been driving for a little over a year stated that, “ I’m just more aware of what I’m doing.” Others have also expressed that they have become more aware of what is happening around them since the new law has been released. While some people find this law beneficial, others say that the law is irrelevant.
People such as Brian Rodriguez say that the law has not really affected them, “I don't really text and drive, I might text once or twice when I stop, if I text at all.” Even though many feel the same way, a lot of people have chosen to ignore the new law.
This law still has not completely stopped people from using their phones while in the car. After asking Kennedy Dunning, another student driver, about why she thinks people do not listen to the new law, she stated, “Usually because they don't think it will happen to them, but it only takes a few seconds for something to happen.” Many people have decided not to follow the new law simply because they feel that they are experienced or responsible enough.
Since the hands free law has been created, more people have voiced their opinions about texting and driving. While we all love our phones, the intent of this law was to make the roads safer for everyone.
