The Hillgrove girl’s lacrosse program has developed greatly over the past few years. Starting out, the JV and varsity teams had very few wins and a team that was not very dynamic. However, as the seasons continued, new coaches and players allowed for growth and the teams soon became known for winning. Last spring season varsity was named region champions, and JV lost only 2 games in their entire season, but how is the team doing now? Are they continuing to play with such great success?
Kate Henry, a Hillgrove High School JV and varsity player gave some insight on what the team hopes to achieve this season and how that has gone so far. “Well, for not ever playing together, we are doing pretty well as a team, I think we could work on our teamwork.” The past spring season brought the loss of four senior players. This season the team is feeling that loss of talent. “We lost a lot of good players last year, but I feel like we can make up for it with all our new players.” Henry spoke about how the high number of new players may allow the team to refill the gaps from previous senior talent. Although the team is working hard, their first few games were not a huge success, so what do they need to improve before the next game? “We need to improve how we work together because we don’t really have a good team dynamic.” The team will continue to push themselves for the sake of the game.
While seniors were lost last season, this season brought new senior faces to the game. “I think the seniors and coaches really set an example and encourage everyone to be a family,” said Emma Russell, another sophomore lacrosse player. There is no doubt that the leadership in girl’s lacrosse has improved just as much as the records have. “They set a great example of how to play and show leadership.” Russell explains how practices and games have run smoothly under the coaches and seniors watch. Improvement still can be made however, “I think we just had to get use to the new players on the team, so we didn’t perform as well but I think we just need to improve and get better.” While the first few games may have been rocky, the weak points have clearly been found in the team’s game.
A team’s game is only as good as each players mentality. Mia Wright, a Hillgrove sophomore who played transition discusses how she feels that the team’s mentality has changed overall. “Its definitely grown everyone seems to be more positive.” This positivity may be what leads the team to victory. She also feels the coaches should address this topic, “I like the coaches a lot. I feel like they need to talk about our mentality.” The players on the team take their game very seriously but Wright feels the game is looked down upon. She feels there are many stereotypes for the sport, such as, “We aren’t tough and there’s no real competition to our game.” These girls hope to overcome all boundaries placed in front of them.
