Girls lacrosse is a sport that used to be nothing, now it is something big. It used to only be big in the north, but it has spread through the south. Girls are trying it out and loving it, more and more try it every year. Playing this sport is more than a game to some, you meet so many new people and make friends from it. It can teach life lessons like any other sport such as, do not give up.
Emily Bond, a student at Hillgrove High School, plays lacrosse. “It is something I have always done, it's my family’s thing, but I really love it so it's not like I am forced to do it, but its just been in my family so it was kind of expected of me I guess, but I love it so I play because it is fun.” Lacrosse is something that when you play it, you get stuck with it. “Since third grade, so eight years.” Playing lacrosse takes up a lot of your free time, “Yes, I don’t have an off season, I practice with my team off season, so we practice 2-3 days in summer, and 1 day during school.” Emily is a part of the girl's lacrosse team at Hillgrove High School. She shared a little about last season, “Um, I think last season went well for us, and for the team bonding wise, and um, I think that we were pretty close as a team.” |
Keon Humphries, the girls lacrosse head coach at Hillgrove High School, shared a little about lacrosse and what it means to him. “Well, I’m a competitor so anything that involves competition I want to be a part of it, like when I got to Hillgrove there was an opportunity so I took the opportunity to coach girls lacrosse and wanted to be competitive and that’s what it has become.” Lacrosse is a team effort, but you need to be a leader on the field, “A leader on the field to me is somebody who um portrays or shows leadership characteristics such as being able to um bring people along and uplift teammates and do things the right way.” Becoming a great lacrosse player takes a lot. “I think that the biggest thing is to find stick time, so any chance you have to be a part of a team and work on your stick skills, and have time out playing lacrosse is always beneficial.”
The sport means a lot, to some it is their life. It has been with them since the day they can remember. Not only playing, but with coaching you still learn more and get better each practice or game. To be good, you have to be a leader, help and motivate them when it is needed. |
