The word "alligator" comes from the Spanish word "el lagarto", which means "the lizard”. Cassandra Cline, a 45-year-old elementary school teacher was attacked and pulled underwater by a gator about eight feet in length on Monday, August. 20, 2018, on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. Emergency responders found the woman’s body in the lagoon. The alligator went after her dog and she tried to protect it. The alligator latched onto the dog's leash and engaged in a tug of war with the woman. The woman’s dog appeared unharmed. The alligator that was believed to be responsible for the attack was located and killed at the lagoon.
Though many people are afraid of alligators, these animals keep to themselves and usually do not attack humans unless they are threatened. It is a very rare thing to happen. Hanna Logan exclaims, “ Animal attacks are very interesting and attract a lot of people!”,which is very true. Fatal alligator attacks are indeed very rare – rare enough that they attract a lot of attention when they happen. Dangerous human-gator interactions are starting to happen more frequently because of the fact that individuals are moving further into gator territory. “People building homes where alligators live have caused the rise in attacks,” stated Kyla Jefferson. This was the second fatal alligator attack in the state since 2016. American alligators are native to the southeastern U.S., with the largest populations being found in Louisiana and Florida. We hope we will not witness anything else as tragic as this.
Alligators are humongous reptiles, members of the order Crocodylia. Alligators and Crocodiles are very closely related, and lots of people always confuse the two. These reptiles are although very different. An alligator is distinguished by its wide, rounded snout and black color and it’s upper teeth can still be seen when its mouth is closed. Crocodiles have restricted, pointed noses, a dim green shading and just the fourth tooth on the lower jaw can be seen when the creature's mouth is shut. The American alligator can grow up to 11.2 feet (3.4 meters) long and weight nearly half a ton. Alligators live in the southern United States, from North Carolina to Texas and can be found in slow-moving rivers, ponds, lakes and swamps.Alligators are social creatures and often stay in groups called congregations. Alligators are carnivores, so any type of prey is a meal to these reptiles.
