From Kings of Middle School to Babies of High School

Freshman year is definitely a challenge. Everyone has to transition from seven classes to four. Most gain completely new friend groups or adjust to new ones. They have to learn to balance the heavy homework load with sports and clubs. All while trying to maintain a good GPA to get into college.
This year’s freshman class is the class of 2022. There are a total of 565 freshman in this class. The majority of their class came from Lovinggood Middle School. There are some that come from Lost Mountain, but it is only 80 to 90 kids.
However, the class of 2022 seems to think they have everything under control, “No, not at all. It has been really easy.”, says Evan Cole, a freshman basketball player, when asked about the transition from middle school to high school.
A lot of the freshman feel there is more freedom in high school, “There is a lot more freedom. There are not as many rules. They do not just spoon feed you all the time.”, says Andrew Gohlke, a freshman football and baseball player. They feel they have everything under control concerning homework and managing their time, “I mean I have done it my whole academic career, but for other people it is [harder], but for me it is not.”, says Evan Cole. They feel the block schedule is better because there is less work in each semester, “Yeah because it is only four subjects a semester and seven is just too much,” says Kennedy Costin, a freshman in color guard.
These freshman also have to balance sports with academics, “During the school day we have weight training, and then after school we go to practice for two hours.”, says Andrew Gohlke, a freshman that participates in both football and baseball. Balancing sports and school work is a very difficult skill to master.
Nevertheless, they are only a month into this school year. Classes have not really kicked into high gear yet. They still feel fresh from summer rest, and are prepared to give this year some effort, but they will soon realize the difficulty they are about to face. The long nights of homework, the constant projects and essays, and everything that comes with being a freshman in high school. These freshman are in for a rude awakening, but hopefully they will be able to push through and finish the year strong like they plan to.
