Freshmen have always been looked down on as high schoolers, but when it comes to football does this stigma still apply? During the 2017-2018 season the freshmen football team obtained a 3-4 record. While they did not have the most successful season, this year’s freshman is hoping to complete the season with more wins than losses. During their first game of the 2019 season the freshman lost 18-7 to Marietta High School, but after speaking to some of the players and learning what mistakes were made and how they hope to turn this season around.
Freshman football player Braydon Allman, discussed how he felt on the game, “We did pretty good, I think we played well together.” The question is, how will they improve before the next game? “working harder and executing in the game and continuing to listen to the coaches.” Allmon explained how the teams work ethic and communication had to improve before the next game. While coaches and player communication has been going well according to DJ Vaughn, “we didn’t know all the plays that they had, like the first play of the game they pulled out a trick play.” He believed the team would have played better had they been more prepared.

Sophomore, Connor Hendrix, played on the previous year’s freshmen team and now plays JV. He supported the freshmen’s success telling how they, “played well against us in a JV vs. Freshman scrimmage.” While the freshman is being pushed hard by coaches in practice the question still stands, what mistakes need to be fine-tuned to match the team’s goals of going far this season? Allmon explained how he felt the freshmen team could take note of how the varsity team was playing saying, “How to listen to the coaches and execute in games and what it supposed to look like.” After game one’s loss I asked DJ Vaughn how he felt practice was changing and whether the approach was changed, “They’re conditioning us harder now… we will improve if we work harder.” The extra effort from players and coaches could be what leads the team to victory. The first loss was a tough situation, but the game was not an overall negative, Connor considered the fact that “They need to work on their offense, however their defense looked pretty good.” While they do have room for improvement, they are considering all mistakes and applying their skills for the best interest of the team. Connor had a word of advice to help them with that, “Learn to work your butt off in the weight room and work your butt off in practice, it’s always a grind, never have an off day.” The team will continue to develop and grow!
