An Inside Scoop on Theatre

Theater is getting prepared for the spring musical. Mr.Sechelski, the director and theater teacher, has chosen to perform Freaky Friday The Musical. Freaky Friday is about a mom and her daughter that seem to never get along and with a little bit of magic somehow trade bodies and places for a day. Being able to put on a musical is a very time-consuming process.
Auditions have not happened yet but is a very long, nerve racking process. Maddie Gale, a junior at Hillgrove High School who is on the board said, “For auditions it is broken down into three processes. The first day we spend on singing, so everyone goes in and sings a 30 second section from a song that he has chosen. Then the second day is dance and they bring in the dance director and everyone performs a little choreography. And then on the third day there are call backs and whoever he saw the two days before he will call back a few people that he saw that had potential, and he calls them in and has them read from a script or maybe sing more songs.” For Freaky Friday, the director will be looking for actors with very good voices because it is a musical and there will be a lot of singing.
A lot of time and hard work goes into the production of the musical like preparing for auditions, making props, and learning lines and song lyrics. Abby Cressy, a Sophomore that wants to audition for the musical, mentioned that they would practice for about two hours three times a week with the occasional Saturday practice. She also said that they would have to practice on their own or in groups in their free time to remember lines and get the feel of performing with the other people in the musical.
For Maddie and Abby, spending all the time is worth it and it is so much fun to be a part of the production. Maddie stated, “Being on board is just fun because I like having control behind the scenes, doing everything with the drama department and coming up with the different ideas that we want to do as a group. Also, I am a historian so I am in charge of the Instagram so I get to post picture constantly.” Abby wants to be in ensemble so her outlook for being in the play is different. She said, “There are so many things to love about being in the musical, but it is really the adrenaline rush you get on opening night and the shows after that makes it all worthwhile.”
Theater for many is like a sport or a hobby, they enjoy spending the time performing and practicing. Many actors start small like being in the school plays or musicals but then flourish into performing on Broadway or being in a T.V. show or movie.
