Hillgrove High School’s Varsity Football team has had an outstanding game history. Last season the team went undefeated. They had a winning streak back in the years of 2009 and 2010 and rank two-hundred seventy six in the nation and twenty in the state of Georgia. Overall the varsity team has won 106 games out of 150, 52 regional games out of 70, and 12 out of 22 playoff games.
Aman Chohan, a Senior at Hillgrove High School, has given insight on how a student views the football team. “We’re just good overall, like come on now. It- it’s Hillgrove Football team. We’re like, we’re killing everyone right now. Like come on it’s the first game we demolishing them. Like come on it’s already half time, what’s the score? Twenty-one, none. Come on now we got this.” As the football team continues this season hopes are high that they make it as far as last season. “All the way. All the way through. If we keep it up right now like how we’re doing, we got it all the way.” Aman’s confidence in the team shows support for the team. “Uh because this is my school. I gotta show up, support. You already know a whole lot of stuff going on. It’s my team man like come on now.” Aman Chohan is ready for the 2019-2020 Varsity Football Season.
As you can see students are excited for this year's football season, but what about the players? Myles Murphy, defensive line on varsity, shares his feelings on how this season will pan out. “Strengths and weaknesses… well going into the season we are- we were kinda panicking that out entire O-line was seniors last year, so our- we have to replace everyone on our O-line but, from what I’ve seen so far our O-line’s actually looking pretty good. Uhh O-line’s looking pretty good, running backs are doing well, defense is doing good as usual.” Like Aman, Myles seems confident in his team, and in his eyes they all have the same goal. “Umm a big motivator for the players, honestly, we all try to win the region championship and that's just a every- every year that we win after the game it’s just a great feeling we all celebrate and some of us go to Waffle House, Otters, and stuff. So it’s just, just a fun game.” The region championship and the feeling of winning a game are just a few motivators that encourage the varsity football team.
Another thing, or people that encourage the football team, is the Coaches. Coach Ironside, the football coach at Hillgrove, is very encouraging to the players. “Uhh definite. Uhh relationships is probably a strength, motivation, those things uhh having done it for a while…” As a result of these relationships the coaches look out for their players regardless of how they play on the field. “Uhh it’s tough because you want to compete and you wanna win, but I believe in you’re gonna develop kids and you’re gonna develop people for heaven and the kingdom as opposed to I’m developing you to win football games.” Coach Ironside tries to coach young men into being good football players, but most importantly to grow into great people. Watching how the players grow in football and life help Coach Ironside know his coaching skills are effective. “Uh, I think you’ll evaluate, you know, where your team’s at and when you start in the spring and then you’re gonna evaluate where your team is when you finish and see the growth and how far they've come. It’s not necessarily all wins and losses cause I think you can have a great growth and great maturity off a group of young men and that doesn’t necessarily equate to wins. That doesn’t mean they’re a bad group or not a good group or didn’t approve so that's kinda how we look at things.” At the end of the day the Football team has a great coach leading them to success.
