Fall Sickness

The seasons are changing and that means it is time for sickness season to start. We have now entered the fall season and the weather is starting to change. With that change comes sickness. We are not even half way into the fall season and already half of Hillgrove is sick with either a cold or strep throat. Temperatures are starting to drop into the low 40’s and high 30’s and are only going to continue to get lower.
The cold this season is what is catching most people off guard. Venicia Twymon told us about how she got sick saying “I believe i got sick because of marching band.” It is not hard to believe that band was the cause of her cold because the band is constantly outside. Most people right now have gotten their cold either because of the cold weather or other people spreading it around. This is a struggle for us because we can not really avoid the weather, only dress for it, and we can not simply skip school and hide at home to avoid catching it from other people. We can however prevent ourselves from spreading it.
Most people have ways of keeping themselves healthy. Dacey Ngo for example says that her big thing she does is “washing my hands”, as a way to keep herself healthy. Other remedies include things such as vitamin C gummies or drinks, allergy medicines, and other medicinal products. Others just steer clear of social events during the sick season. If you are not willing to give up your social life, then bundle up and find a way to keep yourself safe from the weather.
The best way to keep yourself for getting sick is honestly just getting sleep. Studies show that people who are lacking in sleep tend to have a lower working immune system. This is honestly a simple fix for most people. We really only need seven to eight hours of sleep to keep our bodies healthy. Darcy Phillips agrees stating, “ During the summer I always get more sleep and I usually never get sick during that time.” We understand that students have school and with school comes stress, but we can always lower our stress by planning ahead and taking care of ourselves first.
Overall we just want you to stay healthy and sickness free this season. So bundle up, catch some sleep and have a good fall season this year.
