Back to School Faces Covered!
By: Kylie Miller
Schools in Cobb County are going back to school after months of virtual learning due to the
coronavirus pandemic. Schools will reopen November 5 th, but face covering such as masks will
be required. Students have a choice to work from home or attend school face to face; this choice
had to be made already. The due date was September 20 th to make that decision.
Everyone has so many questions about how social distancing will occur when we are back
face to face. Mr.Miller from King Springs Elementary school stated, “Going back to school may
be beneficial for some things but others will be more of a challenge for the teachers for sure,
teachers will basically be teaching two classes at once one on zoom and the other face to face”. Teachers have to make a lot of changes to how they grade assignments because of virtual
learning. Mr.Miller also stated, “A Lot of change is overwhelming. It will take time before it's
normal again, some students don’t learn as well online so it may be hard for some of the students
to catch up and understand”. This is a sacrifice that has to be made.
This pandemic is affecting high school the most. These kids have colleges looking at them
and they must keep their grades up and online school is very challenging. Sofie Alonzo, a
sophomore at Hillgrove High stated, “The hardest part of online school is staying focused and
motivated. This is why I made the decision to go back to school”. The way things used to be
done will no longer be the same because of social distancing purposes. Sofie said, "The desk in
the classroom will probably be spaced out as if we were taking a test”. Transitioning, lunch and
even just sitting in the class will be different.
Parents with younger kids feel the need to stay home to help their kids get on zoom and
log in to everything. Angela Southern has a 1 st grader and a sophomore in high school. Angela
stated, “This is very stressful as a parent of a first and tenth grader. I'm not sure how to help
because I'm not good with technology”. All students who are going back face to face will be
required to wear a mask even the little ones. Mrs. Angela stated, “Kids should not be required to
wear face masks. They are going to school at their own risk and it is 100% their decision”. The
facemask rule is not going to change even though many people disagree with it.
As expressed, schools will open in November but masks are required. This year has
definitely been very different. Some changes going to occur at the school may take time to get
used to. No one knows what to expect .Have to be ready to make solutions and solve problems.
Will students regret coming back to school with all these new rules?
