The Effects of Zeta
By: Kailey Wyatt
Hurricane Zeta left Cobb County in bundles of damage. From fallen trees to power outages, the Metro Atlanta area got hit extremely hard from the storm. With so much to clean up in such little time, Cobb County had no choice but to cancel school on Thursday and Friday. Considering that many people had no internet access, virtual school was also called off. This left students with two unexpected days off.
Coming in at full force, the storm hit hard around 5 am. It progressively got worse as the morning approached. On a night like this, it is no surprise the whole town is awake listening to the sounds of the disaster right outside their window. Lisa Bell, a senior at Hillgrove High School says, “I literally woke up at like 5 am and could not fall back asleep. It was so loud it sounded like my windows were about to break.” With winds as strong as 50 mph, sleep is the last thing a lot of people were worried about. Particularly, living in a house surrounded by lots of trees is a big red flag. It is all fun and games until a storm passes and leaves the house in shambles. Ava Contreras, a freshman at Hillgrove High School explains, “Yeah I was petrified all night thinking a tree was going to end my life on the spot. I barely got any sleep because I was so scared.” Going into the morning, the storm left millions without power and the internet. With that being said, school had no choice but to be cancelled. Although most people were left with no power at all, there are always the lucky ones who do not have that problem. Some students had the day off to do just about anything they wanted but on the other hand, some had to sit in the dark all day. Bell states, “I woke up to no power at all and my phone was not even working and I couldn't even charge my phone until the power came back.” In the days following the storm, it was difficult for people to commute to where they needed to be. Big trees served only as blockades in the roads and stop lights were out. Tony Coviello, a sophomore at Hillgrove High School complains, “My house had no power for a whole day and it really makes you realize how much the internet impacts our lives.”
Zeta brought a great deal of damage to our town. Thankfully, the work force wasted no time to clean everything up. In less than a week's time, we were back to normal again. I mean at the end of the day, who can complain about two free days off from school?
