Many of the residents in southern California are currently struggling and fighting for their survival as their homes were wiped from the hurricane. In over 84 years, Hurricane Hilary was the first hurricane to hit south California. This destruction has caused roads to flood and people to be stranded in their homes.
Based off APN news, Hurricane Hilary originally formed and made landfall around the beginning of August in northern Mexico. Commander Henowski, a current staff member here at Hillgrove claims that the formation of the hurricane occurs when a “storm rolls off of a landmass over water, a low-pressure area it can develop into a storm with counterclockwise winds.” He also claims that many of the emergency services faced a few challenges. “Well, the biggest challenge was the southern California area, much of it was very desert like, it doesn’t receive hardly any rainfall, umm maybe eight to ten inches of rain for a year and to my understanding it got four to five inches at least.” Crews have been working to clear mud and debris, some areas saw rainfall totals that almost met their average rainfall for the year.
According to CBS news, it was a category four hurricane that was churning in the Pacific before crashing ashore into Mexico which caused record breaking rainfall in southern California. The devastation of Hilary extended to Oak Glen where buildings were severely affected. Some buildings were gutted and left with nothing due to the flooding of the water. In terms of damage, the government had been acting and working on recovering. Commander Henowski claims, “So typically when as storm hits, the federal government can declare a national emergency that will free up resources to go in and help clean up and rebuild which can take years.” Damages such as flooding, rockslides, mudslides, small, scaled earthquakes, etc. were all occurring during and after the hurricane swept through.
