On First Performance: Dance Team

Last week was our school's Homecoming, the talk of the week has been dance team. The dance team is something that a lot of people look forward to for pep rallies and basketball game performances. The dance team’s first performance was the pep rally.
There is a lot of preparation that goes into planning a performance. It is figuring out a theme, creating dances, uniforms, hair, makeup, etc. The coach of the team, “Coach B,” says, “There was a lot of practice and a lot of meetings with the captains as well , we discussed what kind of choreography and theme we wanted to go with because we want all our dances to work well together.” As you can read, a lot of time and planning for a performance is required. The theme for their performance was Beyoncé Homecoming, since they were gonna perform for the schools homecoming pep rally. The style was majorette, Majorette is dancers within the marching band. So since Beyoncé incorporated her show with the majorette style, it was very appropriate for the occasion.
To prepare for this they had practices of course. It is two days out of the week and practices usually start off with a five minute stretch, which then gets them right into learning dances for that day. Captain Jasmine Hendrson says, “They really run smoothly when everyone comes with a positive attitude.” She says that it usually takes about one practice to learn a full dance. Also, as a captain, they do have to be hard on the girls so they can make sure they know how to execute the moves correctly.
Even though some dances are considered harder than others, it still usually takes about one practice to learn a dance. Cuts are something new that they are definitely occurring. They say that every girl gets an equal amount of time to learn the dances and it is up to the girls to go home and perfected it. Jasmine says, “ The day we decided to work on formations is usually the day where we allow the girls to go in a group and dance full out as if they’re performing and from there we decide who’s cut or not.”
Uniforms are another big part of this , there was some controversy about them. Some people did not like them, some did not feel comfortable wearing them, people’s parents did not want their daughter wearing certain things, so it was hard to please everyone. Their uniform is a full body suite, with red printed glitter at the top half and fades out at the bottom. Then the bottom half has sheer legs. Captain Jasmine said, “ Even though the uniforms were a tough topic at the beginning of the season, we’ve learned to accept them and add accessories so we would eventually end up liking them.”
The true test is game day. The girls think they did good, everyone brung out a character that the captains have never seen before, there was a positive attitude, energy was there, everything was there.
