Thanksgiving has now passed, and with it two important days for sales: Black Friday and Cyber Monday. The former is applied in many stores and their online shops, while the latter stays on the internet. Cyber Monday has become particularly popular in recent years, due to its accessibility and ease. But does it live up to the hype?
“I think Cyber Monday has better deals than Black Friday. You can typically find everything that was on sale from Friday, but marked down by 10-25% more,” says Ashley Lowe, a senior.
Why do stores have such good deals on these days? It is nearing the end of the year, so it is possible that they are trying to get rid of their merchandise. Ashley is fond of a few in particular:
“Some of the sites that I like with deals include Kohl’s and JC Penney’s. Also many of the stores that are in the mall have good deals on their sites this time of year to get rid of inventory.”
Why do people like the ‘holiday’ so much? Is it the ability to avoid people, the ease of searching something online, or the expanded availability of deals? For example, there are a growing number of online-only stores, including Amazon, Ript Apparel, and Tee Fury, that offer deals on this day. In fact, a lot of box stores are now offering deals that are only online on Black Friday, which begs the question: will business slowly stop having sales in-store and turn to the internet only? Will Cyber Monday take over Black Friday?
“I think people will start looking into it more and more for years to come because Friday usually gets so crowded and people don’t want to stand in line. Plus most websites offer free shipping on those days but now the traffic at businesses will decline. It’s already been declining since most people are looking online now,” explains Madison Brown, a senior.
Since almost everything is going online now, from games to mail to movies to news, it was just a matter of time before shopping turned that way too.
