Cultural Differences of Christmas! By: Karen Garcia-Cano
Christmas is a very popular holiday in many places. Christmas is celebrated on December 25th of every year. The Christmas holiday has the reputation of being a joyful celebration for friends and families alike. It's a day where many people show their love to one another, often by sharing a dinner and giving them a gift to show how appreciated they are after everything and it helps share happiness among families. Christmas day is a very special day with many memories every new year.
Not everyone celebrates Christmas the same. Many people do not even bother celebrating it because it might not be something they enjoy. Vyrenne salvo, a sophomore at Hillgrove high school states, “Christmas is a very special and fun day for my family. We usually tend to decorate our house and put up as many decorations as we can and on Christmas day we arrange a very big family meal for family and friends and also it’s a day to exchange gifts and share happiness with each other.” Many people tend to decorate and put lights up all around their houses, but many people might just not have the time for that or just personally do not like celebrating it.
Christmas is known all over the world and many people from different cultures do not celebrate it the same as many people here in America do. Many people believe that Christmas is celebrated in one specific way which is arranging meals for family and friends and opening Christmas gifts on Christmas day. However, Christmas can be different in many places depending on the way your culture celebrates it. Tyler Hurley a sophomore at Hillgrove high school claims, “I believe that Christmas in other cultures are very much different from the way my family celebrates it because in many cultures not only the name is different but the way they celebrate it might be different.” As an example, many Hispanics celebrate the nine days leading up to La Navidad also known as Christmas. Another way they celebrate La Navidad is by caroling and singing songs from house to house, where the neighbors also join in.
No matter how different many people celebrate Christmas it will always be a holiday where many family and friends have a chance to share a smile and be happy. Christmas will always be celebrated in many unique ways and at the end it does not matter how anyone celebrates it as long as everyone is happy and gets to spend time with their loved ones.
