Run Through Life

Athletics have always been a long standing part of the high school experience, whether it is throwing a ball, diving into a pool, or even running towards a goal, athletes run strong at Hillgrove and our very own cross country team is no different.
These athletes have been running for years. Braedon Bensley, a senior varsity runner, says, “Six years.”, when asked how many years he has been running. These runners are very committed. “At first, my dad told me I should start running, but then I found a passion for it and I love the feeling and high I get from running.”, says Sam Jensen, a senior varsity runner, when asked why he joined the cross country team.
Through thick and thin of injuries and hard runs, these athletes continue to stay strong and push through the pain of this difficult and strenuous sport. Evan Sassenberger, a sophomore varsity runner says, “A lot of them, many hip and knee injuries over the years.”, when asked if he has ever had injuries while running.
Being a student athlete is another very difficult task to master, but these cross country runners seem to have everything under control. “ No, I mean I go to practice and then I go home and do homework, but I’m super smart so it’s not an issue for me.”, says Sam, when asked if he has trouble keeping up with school and cross country.
All of these runners have one thing in common. They all need to have strong mind. “I have strong mind and I can tell myself to keep going, but I can just as easily tell myself I can’t and to give up.”, says Jensen, when asked if it is hard for him to push through the pain of running.
Most people know that sports teams get very close. They spend every day after school for practice together, so they become very close. Evan, a sophomore varsity runner, says, “Because I enjoy it and I want to get better and I made a family out of it.”, when asked why he continues to run.
Every sports team is different. Some become a family some do not. Some run through life and others play a game with all the passion in the world. Cross country is a sport where everyone becomes a part of a family. They experience life together through overnight trips and practice after school. Most of all they run through life together.
