Students are now half way through the spring semester which means that they are now getting ready for next year. With that in mind students now have to start picking classes for next years. Next week students will go around to their classes from the previous semester to pick out their next designated class for that subject then proceed to choose their electives and turn the paper in to the office to have everything processed.
For most students, this time of year can be stressful mainly because they are not sure exactly what classes they should take; this being most common for the junior class in regards to certain subjects. Dacey Ngo stated, “I have been on the honors/AP pathway already so I am already planning on taking AP literature because i do not want to drop down to on level.” For senior year there are really only two options for literature which is the biggest controversy out of all of the subjects. Students must decide if they are willing to go up to AP Language or if they would rather stay in on level multicultural literature. Most base their decisions off of whether or not they are willing to do the senior project every senior must complete if in on-level literature.
Another big thing students also have to consider is their electives and how many they are able to take. This is usually based on what core classes they are taking. Darcy Phillips states, “It’s difficult finding classes to fill my empty slots that are not intro classes, or where I do not have to double up on things.” Students have to fit both electives and core classes into eight slots which does not allow for much room to take classes you are interested in. Most students do not enjoy this part of course registration because a lot of times classes they would like to take can not fit into their schedule and the only way to take them would be to drop another class which is something most students choose not to do.
Some students actually look forward to course registration simply because it gives them an opportunity to plan out their future. They are able to know what classes they will be taking next year and can then plan according to that. Brianne Hatcher says, “The main thing I focus on is deciding what I need to graduate or complete a pathway.” Most students are usually excited about taking certain classes and enjoy different subjects. Course registration allows them to choose classes in which they know they will be interested in now and even in the future.
Take this opportunity as a time to be able to plan ahead for the future, but also look into classes that peak your interest. Good luck with your registration and have fun!
